ASU GUITAR PROGRAM

The ASU Guitar Program was formed Fall of 2000 and has grown steadily since its inception. The program offers guitarists:

   • Weekly private classical guitar lessons
   • The ASU Guitar Ensemble
   • A Guitar Seminar
   • Many performance opportunities
   • ASU Guitar Guild Membership
   • Regular Guest Artist Concerts and Masterclasses
   • Extensive library materials that include scores, recordings, and videos
   • A Guitar Class for Non-Majors.

The area focuses in classical guitar technique and performance.

Weekly lessons are offered to all guitar majors. Guitar majors should register for a one hour lesson per week. Music students who also wish to take guitar may also register for applied lessons as room allows.

The ASU Guitar Ensemble is open to all guitar students enrolled in applied guitar or by permission of the instructor. Meeting Fall and Spring semesters once a week, the guitar ensemble will perform works written for two or more guitars from diverse musical periods. The Guitar Ensemble will play off campus, performing at events in the surrounding areas and beyond.

Also offered, but not part of the guitar degree, is Guitar Class I and II. These classes are open to all ASU students. Guitar Class I meets Fall Semester only and is an introductory course to learning the fundamentals of guitar playing. The course will focus on learning basic chords, conventional strumming techniques and finger picking, and notes in first position as well as the general technique of guitar playing. The text will be Aaron Shearer's Classic Guitar Technique, vol. 1. Guitar Class II, which meets Fall and Spring semesters, continues the techniques of guitar playing discussed in Guitar Class I and applies them to more difficult music.

Dr. Timothy Crist heads the guitar area. He received his BM and MM in classical guitar performance from the Univeristy of Georgia and has over twenty years experience in teaching the guitar. His work Technique for the Guitar, a comprehensive collection of fundamental techniques for learning proper classical guitar technique, is presently seeking publication. Crist also received a DMA in composition from UGA and has written solo and chamber works for the guitar. He has performed throughout the Southeast including Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina, and South Carolina as well as in New York. Go here to contact Dr. Crist.
