I've been working with images of my own and images from others. When the images are of things that I have been teaching over the twenty or so years of my career, I'm struck by "the canon." Not only did early Janson and Gardner provide us with the works that we are accustomed to considering essential in a survey of art history, the images themselves--the point of view, the cropping, the exposure and printing decisions--also constitute a canon. I discover that I am always comparing my new images to the old standard images in the textbooks I used as a student. The CD and DVD industry will disappear. Fast approaching is a time when no normal consumer will be able to break all of the seals and get into the box. Those who seek to influence technological development on a campus should remember that most of the decision makers are print-based people. |
