David Almond, a somewhat recent contributor to the realm of
young adult literature, holds a fascination for the reader that is not readily
apparent. Based on the lore and intrigue that surrounded him as a child, Almond
creates the characters in his books with an aura of the unreal, which in turn
surrounds the reader, enclosing them in a fascinating, imaginary world. He
gently pulls them through events in the story to the conclusion, leaving the
reader with a sensation of “Did I really understand what the author was
intending, or did I imagine it?”
