History of Medicine Writing Project Fall 2006
This semester, rather than a simple term paper, or a massive class project such as the one last year (which earned Dr. Anderson the “Professor from Hell” award in the History Dept.), students are going to take advantage of some thought-provoking questions contained in the reader for the course, Sources in the History of Medicine.
Each chapter has several of these questions, and I have selected two per chapter for the students to write in-depth answers. The list is below. Each answer is to be a minimum of two full pages long, with all the usual caveats about proper punctuation, paragraph and sentence structure, proofreading etc. In addition, for each answer, the student is to append an additional page listing a bibliography of minimum three (3) print sources and three (3) online resources relative to the question. If at all possible, these should include primary sources. (A word on Internet sources – there is an incredible amount of garbage out there, so BE SURE to pick reliable materials. If in doubt, ask the instructor to look at the site. Absolutely avoid K-12 materials – you are college students! Also, be very careful to type the addresses accurately, as these will be checked, and if the address will not work, the entry will be disallowed.)
Each bibliographic entry must be accompanied by a 2-3 sentence annotation which gives the reader enough information to (1) see its relevance to the topic, and (2) provide enough evidence to convince me that you actually looked at the source. Format MUST be Turabian; absolutely no MLA, scientific notations. Questions should be answered during the week in which that particular chapter is assigned. Your work is to be put in a 1” binder (no 4” binders like last semester, please!), with the most recent assignment at the front. Assignments will be collected at several points during the semester, and the entire notebook must be turned in each time.
The assignment is worth a total of 100 points. Grades for each assignment will be graded on a 25 pt scale, and at the end, adjustments may be made based on improvement in style and content, or lack thereof.
