Department Overview

The Team. Our department is comprised of seventeen highly-qualified faculty. Our faculty are a diverse but overlapping and cohesive group.  Our backgrounds include experimental and professional psychology, counseling, and rehabilitation.  Faculty are active in research and grant-writing, dedicated to teaching, and involved in professional organizations.  We are supported by a very competent department secretary and a handful of motivated and skilled graduate student assistants.

The Programs. We have a popular major and minor in undergraduate psychology. We offer several courses in support of programs outside the department, including general education, communicative disorders, nursing, and teacher education.

We offer four graduate professional training programs which lead to several career paths. Most of our graduate programs prepare trainees for licensure and certification for practice in counseling and psychology.

Our School Counseling and Rehabilitation Counseling programs are nationally accredited. Our specialist program in Psychology and Counseling trains mental health counselors and school psychology specialists. In collaboration with the Leadership department, we also offer a new program in College Student Personnel Services.

The Students. About 300 students each semester identify themselves as undergraduate psychology majors.  Over 90 students are enrolled in our graduate programs.

Our undergraduate students can join our active national chapter of Psi Chi, an honor student organization, and the Psychology Club.  Students in our graduate counseling programs choose among ASURCA, ASU Rehabilitation Counseling Association, and our national chapter of Chi Sigma Iota.

Many undergraduate and graduate students work closely with faculty, often on research projects.

In addition to nine graduate assistantships provided by the Graduate School, Rehabilitation Counseling students can apply for RSA scholarships. Also, College Student Personnel Services students can apply for assistantships to work in student affairs staff positions on campus.

The Facilities. All department offices, classrooms, and support facilities are conveniently located in the Education Building on the east side of campus. All of our offices and classrooms have internet connections. We teach in "smart" classrooms, capable of delivering multimedia instruction. We have a computer lab that supports our courses and individual student projects. We also have an experimental psychology lab with support facilities. We share with other departments in the college a clinic located on the first floor. The clinic is well-supported and has a group counseling room, and six individual client rooms, with remote video-taping and audio communication capabilities.

Our Mission

The primary mission of the Department of Psychology & Counseling is to teach basic principles underlying psychology as a behavioral science and to prepare graduate-level students to become psychological-counseling professional service providers.  At the Baccalaureate level, there are majors and minors in psychology, service courses for Professionally Emerging Teachers and other programs including general education.  At the graduate level, the program prepares professional service personnel at the master and specialist degree levels as school, community, and rehabilitation counselors; educational and psychological examiners; and college student personnel specialist.  The department also provides advanced educational psychology as a core course for MSE majors as Emerging Professionals.

The department is committed to serving the university, the profession, and the public by contributing to excellence in education, high professional standards for service delivery, and consumer advocacy.  The department is also committed to research and scholarly activities to expand the academic knowledge base and to improve the quality of professional services.
