I. Required writing assignment for all students - Legal Environment of Business - Summer 2011 (Points: 50)

  1. Brief Magic Touch Corporation v. Hicks, an Arkansas case involving Jonesboro defendants.

  2. Summarize the case in the “case brief” format described on pages A-1 to A-3 in Appendix A of the textbook.  The case brief should contain the following five sections:  (1) Citation; (2) Facts; (3) Issue; (4) Decision; and (5) Reason.  These five sections of the case brief normally contain approximately 300-500 words.  The “Reason” section should be the longest section of the brief, and it should contain approximately 150-250 words.

  3. At the end of the case brief, please add a sixth section entitled “(6) Ethical Considerations.”  In this section, please explain in detail whether you believe the court’s decision in the case is ethical.  Your explanation must apply at least one of the following approaches to ethical reasoning:  (a) Religious Ethical Standards; (b) Kantian Ethics; (c) The Principle of Rights; or (d) Utilitarianism.  The length of this “Ethical Considerations” section should be between 150 and 250 words.

  4. The paper is due in class Wednesday, June 29.  The paper must be typed.

II. Optional Extra Credit Writing Assignment

  1. Do not forget the optional extra credit project described in the course outline. ("You will earn up to 10 bonus points by preparing an analysis of a current business legal issue.  Your analysis must be typed and be around three pages long.  You must include at least two citations beyond the textbook.  The due date is Thursday, June 30.")

  2. I am expanding the possible topics for this optional assignment. In addition to possibly selecting a current business legal issue, you may choose instead to summarize the legal environment of a country besides the United States.  Again, the paper should run around three typed pages and include at least two citations.
