Chapter 4 - Ethics and Business Decision Making

Section 1

1. Describe the study of ethics

    a. Differentiate law from ethics, including internal versus external rules, and mandatory versus voluntary rules

    b. Identify and describe several companies and individuals that have experienced legal and ethical business problems

Section 2

2. Apply different approaches to ethical reasoning

    a. Compare and contrast duty-based ethics (religious standards, Kantian ethics, the principles of rights) to outcome-based ethics (utilitarianism, corporate social responsibility)

    b. Explain the lifeboat case, Regina versus Dudley and Stephens, in terms of ethics  

3. Discuss the appropriate source for ethical leadership

    a. Explain Case 4.2, Fog Cutter Capital Group

    b. Discuss corporate codes of conduct

    c. Explain the Sarbanes-Oxley Act

4. Discuss the moral minimum, executive pay, controlling behavior through the law, and legal gray areas

5. Apply the May Company six ethical guidelines

6. Apply the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act
