Photojournalism Emphasis Program

About our Program:

The photojournalism sequence at Arkansas State University is the only accredited photojournalism emphasis degree program in the state. Its graduates have been employed as photojournalists, photographers, writers, graphic designers, digital imaging professionals and reporters throughout the region. Students have the opportunities to explore studio, digital  and freelance magazine projects.  The program isn't designed just for newspaper photojournalists, our students have also gone on to prestigious graduate schools.

At ASU, this small major provides students with individual attention. You're not lost in the shuffle, you and your ideas and style matter. Students are encouraged to find their own vision and find practical applications of that vision in photography, you're not just another number at this school.

Upon completion of the three course photography sequence in conjunction with the journalism core courses, students are required to submit a professional portfolio, which may be used for personal use or to gain employment. In addition, the photojournalism sequence gives students the opportunity to improve their writing skills through the required journalism courses, which help them be more competitive in the fast paced communications field.

Along the way, students have the opportunity to see their work published in campus publications and in class published projects. ASU facilities include a multi-media lab with Internet access. Students are encouraged to produce and publish web pages.

The program also emphasizes the new and emerging digital photography techniques and skills. Traditional color and black & white skills are an important part of the program. The photo lab has excellent color facilities and the largest black & white darkroom setup of any university in the region.
