Masters of Rehabilitation Counseling
Arkansas State University
Jonesboro, Arkansas

Employment Opportunities

The Masters of Rehabilitation Counseling (MRC) program at Arkansas State University (ASU) is a generalist rehabilitation counseling program. The MRC program does not focus on a single type of disability, age of the individual living with the disability, or employment setting. However, students are encouraged to structure their academic experiences in a manner that will prepare them to provide counseling and related services to individuals with disabilities in their selected focus area (i.e. type of disability, age, employment setting, etc.), as appropriate.

Employment as a provider of professional rehabilitation counseling and related services is dependent upon the individual professional’s “scope of practice.”

Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) – Scope of Practice and Academic Preparation

The Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (CRCC) recognizes that an individual's scope of practice is necessarily more narrow than the larger profession’s scope of practice. Because the MRC program is accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education Certification, a graduate is eligible to sit for the Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) examination. The CRC credential is recognized nationally and internationally.

Counselor Licensure – Scope of Practice and Academic Preparation

In the State of Arkansas, individuals seeking counselor licensure must provide the Board of Examiners in Counseling (Board) with a written and signed scope of practice statement. The statement is notification to the Board and the public of the individual's practice intent. The Board recognizes the academic preparation an MRC graduate because the individual has graduated from a program accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education. Furthermore, an MRC program graduate who is a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) can request that his/her license identify him/her as a licensed counselor who has the knowledge and skills to provide counseling services to individuals with disabilities and their significant others. Only CRC’s can request this recognition from the Board.
