Study guide for Com Research  Midterm for October 15, 2001

Chapters 1 ,2, 3, & 6  and all notes posted on web which have been referred to in class lecture.

 Your test will cover APA style of writing.  Be familiar with the way to cite articles in a text, personal communication in a text, and a lengthy list of cites dealing with one concept and web citations.   

 Have knowledge of data base use, ellis use, and  keyword searches.

Be familiar with the principals of writing literature reviews, the purpose of variables, research questions,  reliability, variability,  all concepts related to the construction of surveys and content analysis, secondary research, primary research.  Experiment, content analysis,  differences between book material and journal articles. Be able to identify what method of research would be used in certain situations, Focus group, Qualitative vs quantitative research, citations for one, two, three and four author papers, citations with different types of paginated journals, sample, population, different types of probability and non probability samples and the process of drawing them, research proposals, statement of purpose, basic model of communication, different types of scales, form questions for surveys which are valid, magic bullet theory, agenda setting, cultivation theory, social learning theory, gerbner, bandura, uses and gratifications, internal validity, external validity, generalizability, source of error, non response bias, sample size, valid list to pull samples from, plus one random dialing sample, & writing literature reviews
