SPSS using the MacIntosh Remember only 8-10 computers have SPSS in the multimedia lab. Go to the apple Click on apple and find SPSS. Click on SPSS An Untitled data screen will appear. Save data screen in your name. Example: Drjpdata.sav Defining variables: Click on data menu item at top of screen. Go to Define Variable...Click on this. A window opens up that asks you for a variety of information. 1. Name the variable... Only 8 characters 2. Go to Labels spot on window. 1. Variable label. Type exact coding information or survey question 2. Value— This is the numeric value for your responses 1. Value Labels– This is all of your responses 3. Clock through oks to set these.
Creating a template when your variable have the same response categories as other variables. 1. Go to template on define variable pull down menu and open. In lower right corner, click on define. Go to template description. Type in the name of your template.... ie Likert In the apply window, check for value labels. Click on Value Labels, Type in value labels. 2. Applying template to all variables. Highlight variables with the same value label. Go to pull down data menu, Go to template. Open Template with the correct response, then apply to all variables. SPSS tabulates your data. 1. Open analyze data menu. 2. Pull menu down. Open Descriptive statistics 1. Frequencies, Descriptives, Explore, and Crosstabs 1. Click on Frequencies. 1.Use alt and mouse to highlight all variables that you want to run. 2. Click arrow to the right in middle of frequency menu. (All variables will move to the right box 3. Click on statistics 1. Central tendencies and dispersion. Click on all of the boxes 2. If you want a chart you can click on chart. 2. Click on ok and the program runs your material. 3. ALWAYS RUN FREQUENCIES ON ALL OF YOUR VARIABLES.
2. Making comparisons between groups. Use the same process as in the previous section, but click on Crosstabs instead of Frequencies. 1. You will move your variables to Row and Column based upon what groups you are wanting to compare. 2. You will be asked what statistics you want to run.....click on chi-square. 1. Now click on cells. You want percentages as well as count as marked.
Run chi square... click on OK. |
