The Internet

•       The internet is a communications network with no central authority

–   It is made up of  a central network of high speed telephone lines designed to carry lots of computer data.

–   Worldwide digital data network  

 

Computer origins

•        Began with the abacus 460 B.C.

–     Father of the Computer is Charles Babbage

–   ENIAC—the first full service electronic computer

•   Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator

–   1946..

–   UNIVAC- Universal Automatic computer  first commercial computer used by the census bureau

   Military purposes

•      ARPAnet  --1969

–   Used to transport large amounts of information

–   Robert Kahn coined the term Internet

•      WWW released in 1992

The Internet

•       Innovation theory

–   novelty period (1960s-1970s)

•    Few people use it.   Very expensive

–   entrepreneurial period(1982)

•   Early adopters begin to use it to their advantage

–   mass medium (1993)

•   The fast adoption rate of any mass medium.

Mass Medium

•      Arbitron (2001) reports that one third of americans would give up tv if forced to choose between at home internet access or television

•      While internet adoption is starting to slow down 13 percent of American are using streaming media. 

•      With the adoption of broadband access streaming will only increase.

The Intranet

•       Password protected webs used for communication within companies and organizations.

Economic Models

•       Television model

–   Users passively receive information

•      Phone model

–   Interpersonal, two way communication

Knowledge gap

–   The richer will have access to the latest media technology and the poorer will not.

Advertising on the web

•      Click throughs to banner ads have leveled off and are dropping

–   You can also see this in the shake out of business as many reduce the internet arms of their businesses

•      Purchase behavior is stable and spending is up.  (Arbitron, 2001)
