BOOK REPORT INSTRUCTIONS

Book Reports are due:  March 14th and April 18th

All book reports must be type written using 12 point font style, Times New Roman,  double space, book reports should be at least 2 pages in length but not more than 4 pages.

The book does not have to be approved by the professor if it already appears on the reading list.       www.clt.astate.edu/mpitts/reading_list.htm

Books not found on the reading list must gain approval from the professor.

Book reports should be organized according to the 6 sections noted below ... where possible /appropriate answer the questions posed ... it is not necessary to begin each section on a new page however ...  Remember not to be critical of authors who wrote material 20 years ago, for lack of knowledge about society today.  Instead, offer observation about changes and how the author might have viewed those changes had they lived today.

APA stylebook should be used as a guide to writing your book report.

SECTION # 1–Information about the book.     3

Use the APA stylebook for the books citation.

Pitts, M.J. (1998).  Documentary.  New York: Micro Publishing.

SECTION # 2      Author Material    5

Tell me something about the author of the book.

Is the author qualified to write the book?   Give justification for why the author is qualified to write the book.  Use other reference resources to find out information about the books author.  If you do an Internet search, attach the material found to the book report.

SECTION #3:  Diversity and Multiculturalism     30

Talk about current media and its relationship to this book    Discuss whether this book addresses diversity in relation to race, gender, socioeconomic, ethnicity of main characters and or country of origin of sources.

SECTION # 4 – Books Content    50

Tell me about the book. What is the theme? Why is the book important? What interesting things did you learn from the book? Summarize what the book is about. Do not quote long passages from the book (you are doing the writing in this section). If direct quotes are used, indicate page number from book at end of quote in parenthesis (i.e., p. 3).

Provide "at least four" specific illustrations from the book to show what took place and to give the reader an idea of what the book covered.

SECTION # 5 -- PERSONAL EVALUATION   12

Evaluate the book. Don't just tell me you would or would not recommend the book to someone else but tell WHY with specifics.

** Mention specific topics or class discussions where similarities/differences were found. What types of people would find this book interesting or helpful? How would you change this book? What needs to be deleted or included in this particular book?

RELATE THE BOOK TO OUR CLASS AND OUR DISCUSSIONS ... if we have not discussed the particular topic yet, look it up in the index and skim that section of the text ... then talk about it and its relation to class ... give specific examples.

Section #6

For the sake of anonymity, please put your name at the top left corner of the last page of your report.  In addition, place the name of the class, the section number of the class, the date the report is to be turned in, and the category the book falls under immediately under your name.
