Exercise 24 - Special Senses: Vision
Using figure 24.1 and 24.2 and models be able to identify:
The six extrinisic muscles of the eye, their actions and
innervation, also levator palpebrae superioris muscle.
The lacrimal apparatus: lacrimal gland, puncta, superior and
inferior canaliculi, lacrimal sac, nasolacrimal duct.
Other accessory structures: eyelids, tarsal plate, tarsal
glands, palpebral and bulbar conjuntiva, medial and lateral canthus, caruncle.
Using Figure 24.3, models and sheep eye be able to identify
(where appropriate):
Cornea, anterior segment (cavity)( anterior and posterior
chambers), aqueous humor, sclera, scleral venous sinus, iris, lens,
suspensory ligaments, ciliary body, ciliary processes, posterior segment
(cavity), vitreous humor, choroid, retina, ora serrata, optic disc, macula lutea,
fovea centralis, and in sheep eye - tapetum lucidum.
Pathological changes - glaucoma, and cataracts - what are
they, and what part of the eye is affected.
Microscopic slide: photoreceptors, pigmented epithelium, bipolar cells, ganglion
cells.
Complete activities 4, 5, 6,7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12: visual
pathways, demonstrating the blind spot (know what structure causes this and
why), demonstrating afterimages, determining near point of accommodation, visual
acuity testing, testing for astigmatism, color blindness, tests for binocular
vision (also look at Randot plates), pupillary and convergence reflexes.
