Exercise 4 The Cell: Anatomy and Division
Be able to identify on cell model and on prepared slides (where possible) and to give a function for:
nucleus, plasma membrane, cytoplasm, chromatin, chromosomes, nucleolus, nuclear envelope,  microvilli, ribosomes, cytosol, rough endoplasmic reticulum, smooth endoplasmic reticulum,  Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, peroxisomes, mitochondria, centrioles, microfilaments, intermediate filaments, microtubules

Be able to define selective permeability, active transport, passive transport.

Be able to list the phases of mitosis and tell what is happening in each. Be able to identify these under the microscope. Define cytokinesis.

Exercise 6 Classification of Tissues
 Be able to identify on computer slides and microscope slides the following tissues:
 Epithelial tissues :simple squamous epithelium, stratified squamous epithelium, simple cuboidal epithelium, stratified cuboidal epithelium, simple columnar epithelium, pseudostratified epithelium, transitional epithelium.
Connective tissues: areolar or loose connective tissue, adipose tissue, reticular connective tissue, dense regular connective tissue, dense irregular connective tissue, hyaline cartilage, elastic cartilage, fibrocartilage, bone, blood.
Muscle tissue: Skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, smooth muscle tissue.

What are the general characteristics of epithelial tissue? Connective tissue? Muscle tissue? Nerve tissue?
Where do we find intercalated discs, and what do they do?

Using the CD that came with your lab manual or by logging onto the PhysioEx web site, complete the activities for the lab.
It is strongly recommended that you fill out the Review Sheet for Exercise 5B on page p-127 of your lab manual. This could be an excellent source for exam questions over this material!!!

The Histology Tutorial, exercise 6B is optional, but may be helpful if you have not used a microscope much.
