Character: Semele, the main character, is in love with Jupiter, the god of thunder. However, Jupiter is married. His wife, Juno, does not like Jupiter's love affairs, and so she decides to get even. She goes to Somnus, the god of sleep, and asks him to give Jupiter a dream about Semele that is so erotic that he will do anything that Semele asks. Then Juno disguises herself as Semele's sister and persuades her to ask Jupiter to appear to her in his true form. The end of the story is that Jupiter does come to Semele in his true form; and of course, where there is thunder, there is lightning. So, Semele is "consumed by Jupiter's fire" and dies.
In "Leave Me, Loathsome Light," I am Somnus, the god of sleep. I have just been awakened by Juno. Since I am the god of sleep, I don't like to be woken up; hence the song.
Throughout most of the song, I'm not really talking to anyone in particular. I'm just wanting to go back to sleep. In the bridge of the aria however, I speak to the river Lethe that runs through my cave. Lethe, is the river of forgetfulness. I'm asking it to lull me back to sleep.
I'm not sure if I'm actually speaking the words of the song or if they just express my thoughts and the way I feel when Juno awakens me. It's probably more of the latter.
