Having been a member of the faculty at ASU
since 1969, Scott Darwin is the senior member of the foreign language staff
and is the lone Professor of German, and Spring 2008 marks his final
semester at ASU. Scott earned a B.A. in mathematics at
Hendrix College in 1967, an M.A. in German in 1969 and a Ph.D. in
Comparative Literature in 1984 from the University of Arkansas.
During the academic year 1986-1987 Scott
had the pleasure of teaching English at the Gymnasium in Berchtesgaden,
Germany, through the Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program. Since 1970 he has
returned every other summer to Germany to maintain the many friendships that
he has developed there over the years and also to maintain his taste for
Weizenbier (wheat beer) and hiking in the Alps.
Since the reunification of Germany a major
research interest of Scott's has been the restructured public school system
in the states of the former East Germany.
Reflecting his interest in the environment
and good health, Scott walks to the university each day and picks up -
somewhat begrudgingly - the trash that people have thoughtlessly tossed from
their cars.
In addition to hiking, Scott enjoys most
water sports from swimming to scuba diving to white-water canoeing.
