Dr. Baum holds a BSE degree from NE Missouri State
University, and MA and PhD degrees from the University of
Missouri-Columbia. He came to ASU in 1993, served as Acting Chair from 1996
to 1998, appointed Chair from 1998 to 2002, and Interim Chair for the
academic year 2002-03. During this time he was both tenured and promoted to
Associate Professor of Spanish.
Dr. Baum’s research interests still concern
epistolarity and travel literature, but in the past several years he has
been more actively involved with historical novels, detective fiction, and
Cuban-American writings. As for “favorite” writers, he regards Juan Madrid,
Homero Aridjis, Isabel Allende, and Vargas Llosa to be without parallel.
