Languages: The Key to Your World

New at the Department of Languages

The Department of Languages is embracing the new frontiers of globalization as it welcomes a new Chair, new faculty, and new offerings, including courses in Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, and Swahili, in addition to French, German, and Spanish. The department also offers a minor in International Studies that includes an upper-level language component combined with selected courses from the humanities and social sciences as well as other areas. The Department of Languages is truly committed to ushering in a new era of language studies at ASU.  We want to encourage everyone to stop by our offices in 220 Wilson to find out about the many opportunities the department offers, even for those with no previous foreign language experience.

New faces in the Dept. of Languages

We are pleased to welcome Dr. Yvonne Unnold, Associate Professor of German and Spanish and Chair of the Department of Languages, to the ASU family.

Dr. Unnold has extensive teaching experience at the university and also at the secondary education level; she has taught Spanish, German, and ESL in language, culture and teacher education programs in Costa Rica, Mexico, the United States and Germany. Dr. Unnold routinely contributes to regional, national and international conferences and has published on instructional technology and second language acquisition, as well as on Latin American and German literary and cultural discourse.  Dr. Unnold’s educational training includes an Ed.S. in Higher Education Leadership and Administration from the University of Southern Mississippi, a Ph.D. and MA in Comparative Literature with emphasis in Latin American and German literature from the University of Washington, and additional graduate studies in the Latin American Literature Program at the Universidad de Costa Rica. She obtained a BA in Comparative Literature from the University of California in Davis. Born and raised in Germany, Dr. Unnold completed her primary and secondary education in her native country.

We also welcome in Fall 2008 Dr. Juan Pablo Gil-Oslé, Assistant Professor of Spanish.  Dr. Gil-Oslé received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 2007 and has previously taught at the University of Michigan as well as worked as a translator of Spanish, French, and Basque.  His research interests center on the Spanish Golden Age, including Cervantes and Tirso de Molina.

Ms. Hanne Pardos is assisting with the teaching of German.  Ms. Pardos is a native of Mannheim, Germany.  We welcome back Ms. Gabriela Varela Sánchez, a graduate of the Universidad de Huelva, Spain, who rejoins the department as full-time temporary instructor in Spanish.

New temporary teaching staff for 2008-09 include Ms. Myrna Abdallah from Lebanon, Arabic, and Mr. Isaac Ong'oa from Kenya, Swahili. Ms. Abdallah is a Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant and Mr. Ong'oa is a student in the Heritage Studies doctoral program at ASU.  Ms. Angelyn Imler, a graduate

of our BA program in Spanish, will also join our teaching family.  We are very pleased to have with us Ms. Marion Chatelin and Ms. Stéphanie Dogo, both graduates of the Université de Cergy-Pontoise, who will be teaching Elementary French after having helped our students in previous semesters as tutors.

Ms. Nikki Adams is the new secretary in the department.
