Procedures For All Agriculture Education Majors To Complete Checkpoint One: Required to Screen into the Agriculture Education Program

The aim of this page is to assist all Agriculture Education majors to complete the required admission criteria for the beginning level designated as "Checkpoint One". These requirements must be met in order to be officially admitted into the Teacher Education Program at Arkansas State University. This information is also found in the current ASU Teacher Education Handbook: For Undergraduate Teacher Education Majors, page 8. Please refer to this handbook in support of this. There are also additional requirements for Checkpoint One for the student majoring in Agriculture Education which must be met. Follow these steps to accomplish these requirements. It is critical that each student develops their own file of this information.
This is a straight forward process. By following the step-by-step process the student will be prepared to officially screen into the teacher education program at Arkansas State University-Jonesboro in the discipline area of Agriculture Education. All Agriculture Education majors need to complete the following requirements:
Step # 1. Complete the following specific courses with a grade of "C" or better:
English-1003
English-1013
Math-1023
SCOM-1203
SCED-2514
AGED-1403
AGED-1411
Step # 2. Attain and maintain a GPA of 2.5 or greater. The 2.5 GPA is the minimum allowed level for all education majors. Obtain a "Verification of GPA" from your registrar's office.
Step # 3. Complete a minimum of 30 "earned" semester hours.
Step # 4. Attain a passing score for the reading, math and writing tests of the PPST (PRAXIS I) exam. Reading (min. 172), Math (min. 171), and Writing (min. 173).
These exams are best taken at the end of the first year or by the first semester of the sophomore year. Contact the ASU Testing Center at 870.972.2038 and make arrangements to take the tests. This can be done on a computer which is better than the method of signing up and coming to a designated time and place to take the test in handwritten form. The ASU Testing Center is the closest location that offers the exams on computer. Step # 5. Complete an evaluation of Career Decision Awareness Assessment.
This may take up to 3 to 4 weeks to complete. Once completed this needs to be delivered to your advisor. It is also important that each student keeps a copy for themselves. Complete the appropriate information while in the form on the web. Print it out and then take this form to the Counseling Center to begin the assessment process.
Step # 6. Submit a completed Application Form.

The first 3 pages on this site is the application form that must be filled in. All three pages are required. Fill in the appropriate sections while in the form on the web and then print out. This also includes the signed "Clarification of Teacher Education Admissions/Retention Standards" form which is also found on this site, page 3.
Step # 7. Submit a computer generated, 2 page paper, on your philosophy of education.
Step # 8. Complete and submit a one page, computer generated, personal autobiography.
Step # 9. Must attend a minimum of two (2) Professional Development meetings provided by the Agriculture Education program. (These will be announced during each semester in order for all agriculture education majors to plan to attend).
Step # 10. Obtain, complete and submit the Arkansas State University Departmental Screening Report for Agricultural Education.
