Undergraduate Degree Programs

Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Music
Designed for the student who wants a music degree but is not interested in teaching in the public schools and not interested in a performance degree.  This degree allows considerable flexibility in choosing a strong minor to complement the music degree.  Bachelor of Music – This degree is for those students who are seeking a career in music performance.

Bachelor of Music Education
This degree is for those students who want to teach instrumental music in the public schools. A special feature of this instrumental degree are the six special "techniques" classes on teaching the various wind and percussion instruments.  Public school teachers who have supervised our student interns consistently comment on our students' ability to address performance problems on instruments other than their major intruments.

Band Grants in Aid are available in varying amounts from “Participation Awards” for participation in Marching Band up to full tuition and fees for the most talented and active students.  The grants are available to students in majors other than music.  We are proud of the amount of participation by non-music majors.

Clarinet Study

Clarinet majors have a weekly, one-hour lesson for 2 credits.  Lessons are designed to develop the musical and technical skills necessary for the student to succeed in whatever specific part of the music business they are interested in pursuing.  Traditional literature in various styles is used as well as that which required contemporary performance techniques and improvisation for those who are interested.

The detailed course of study includes materials developed by Mr. Hatch through his twenty-plus years of teaching.  Tone, Flexibility, and Scales Studies for Clarinet  includes a play-along CD for scale study and developing intonation awareness.  Material for study and performance is chosen with the individual’s interests, strengths, and career aspirations in mind.

Studio Class
In addition to weekly private lessons, clarinet students meet weekly as a group for discussion of relevant topics such as:  Reed Adjustment, Intonation, and Pedagogy.  The class time is also used for solo performances in a master class situation as well as small ensemble rehearsal and performance.

Performance Opportunities

Wind Ensemble
The University Wind Ensemble includes the most accomplished wind and percussion players on the ASU campus.  The group performs approximately fifteen times per year, including five on-campus concerts and a spring tour.

The Wind ensemble utilizes the player pool concept, performing a wide variety of repertoire ranging from wind octet to full concert band.  Quality and innovative programming highlight the performance schedule, and the Wind ensemble’s flexibility provides players with varied musical challenges and experiences.

The Wind Ensemble has recorded three CD’s, including a live performance at the College Band Directors’ National conference in Kansas City with guest conductor Karel Husa.

Symphonic Band
The Symphonic Band provides a quality concert experience to interested campus musicians. During the spring semester, the Symphonic Band plays two concerts and travels to area high schools on a one-day tour. Membership is open to all interested musicians with previous band experience.

Tribe – Jazz Band
The Tribe is ASU's premier jazz ensemble, representing the finest jazz musicians on campus. Members are chosen by auditions held at the beginning of each semester. The Tribe presents two concerts per semester, and participates in several jazz festivals in the spring. The Tribe has presented concerts featuring guests artists such as Bobby Shew, Marvin Stamm,  Ed Soph and Bob Mintzer.

Marching Band
The 150-member Marching Indians provide excitement and spirit to ASU football games. The Marching Indians entertain crowds at halftime with innovative marching shows, and provide spirit before, during and after the game. In addition, the band performs at several marching contest exhibitions, and a least one out-of-town football game per season. Membership is open to all interested musicians. Members of the flag and majorette lines are selected by auditions in April.

Jazz Lab Band
The Jazz Lab Band provides an outlet for jazz musicians with less experience, or those with a desire to learn the style. It meets one afternoon a week, and is open to all interested musicians. The Jazz Lab Band performs at two concerts per semester, usually in conjunction with the Tribe.

Several ASU single reed students have had the opportunity to perform with Mr. Hatch in the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra.  Professional performance experience at this level cannot be overestimated.

Student Recitals
Student recitals are held weekly in the Fine Arts Recital Hall.  Music majors are required to perform once a semester in this forum.

Music Department Honors Recital
Selected through an audition for the music faculty, the best performers in school are invited to perform in a formal evening recital in April as a part of the Convocation of Scholars week.

Student Composers Concert
Student composers put together a recital each semester to highlight their best compositions and performers get a chance to premier the music in a live performance situation.
