Downloading Files
While most of the documents available through this web site can be read directly
through your web browser (e.g., Netscape), numerous resources must be
opened using some other software. Unless your browser has been especially configured
to do this automatically (as with plug-ins), it requires a simple three step procedure:
(1) Downloading the file for the resource you wish to open; (2) opening the
appropriate program, such as PowerPoint; and (3) using that program to
open (and to work with) the file you have downloaded. Since you should be generally
familiar with working with the programs involved (i.e., PowerPoint, SPSS,
Word or WordPerfect, and Excel or other
spreadsheet), the latter two steps are not addressed here. (Note that, in any case,
you must use the appropriate software for any given file you
wish to open; i.e., use a spreadsheet for spreadsheet files, a word processor for word
processor files, a presentation package for presentation files, etc.) Since the
downloading process may be new to you, you may find one of the following procedures to be
useful in guiding you for this step
- To download files using Netscape, simply hold down the shift key and
click(left) on the filename of the file you want to download. A window will appear
verifying the filename. Edit the name, if appropriate, indicate the drive and folder to
which your are downloading the file, and click on OK to download.
- To download files using Internet Explorer, click (right mouse button) on
the file you want to download and choose Save Target As from the menu that appears.
Another window will display so you can select the destination for the file.
- To download files using Mosaic, select the Load to Disk Mode item
in the Options pull-down menu. Click on the filename of the series you want to
download and the Save As window will appear. Edit the name, if appropriate,
indicate the drive to which your are downloading the file, and click on OK to
download. Remember to unselect the Load to Disk Mode item when you are finished
downloading files.
