Creating PivotTables in Excel
A. Organize Data Properly
- Data must be in contiguous block
- Single label row should be immediately above actual data
B. Create PivotTable
- Select entire data set, including label row
- Click on Data | PivotTable
- Click on Finish (a blank work area will appear on the spreadsheet)

Specify the layout of the pivottable:
- Select button with column heading indicating row variable and drag to ROW
- Select button with column heading indicating column variable and drag to COLUMN
- Select button with column heading indicating either variable and drag to DATA
- Double click on top left button in the table
- Select Count from Summarize by menu
- Provide appropriate title in Name box
- Click on Options button and then click button at right end of Show data as
input area
- Scroll to appropriate indicator (for example, % of Total)
- Select desired indicator
- Click on OK
- Save your work
C. Edit Output as Appropriate
- Add title
- Row and column headings
- Other (e.g., display formats, column widths, . . . )
- Save your work
