Troubleshooting .NET

Here are a couple of things that may need to be done to make working with .NET web applications possible.

• Upgrading IIS (necessary if VStudio is installed before IIS)
   
  • Version 2002 of VStudio (this does work)
     
    • Place the Web Components Update disk (i.e., Disk 5) from VStudio.NET into the CD drive
    • Click on Start | Run and then paste the following command into the Open textbox:

         e:\dotNetFramework\dotnetfx.exe /t:c:\temp /c:"msiexec.exe /fvecms c:\temp\netfx.msi"

    • Click the OK button and let the installation proceed until done
       
  • Version 2003 of VStudio (not yet tested)
     
    • Place the Prerequisites disk from VStudio.NET into the CD drive
    • Click on Start | Run and then paste the following command into the Open textbox:

         e:\english\vs.net2003_prerequisites\dotNetFramework\dotnetfx.exe /t:c:\temp /c:"msiexec.exe /fvecms c:\temp\netfx.msi"

    • Click the OK button and let the installation proceed until done
       
• Modify Your File Location
   
  • The .NET framework apparently doesn't like files to be stored in the My Documents folder.
  • As a result, you may get a  "Access denied . . . " error when running a .NET application if your files are stored anywhere in My Documents.
  • Therefore, create a folder on the root of your disk (whether your hard drive, your floppy, your Zip, etc.) and store your .NET projects and other files in there.
  • If this doesn't work, check your security settings, as discussed in the note on page 298 of the text.
