Working with SmartFTP 2.0

Here are some guidelines for using SmartFTP (as installed in the Business computer labs) for uploading and downloading files to and from the SuSE1 server.  You will also need to use SmartFTP for managing files once they are on the server.  Bear in mind that these guidelines provide one of generally several approaches for accomplishing tasks with SmartFTP.

• To get started, navigate through Start | Programs | SmartFTP
• Close all windows and panes
• Unselect Anonymous if it's highlighted (on Address bar, below Menu bar)
• Open a connection to SuSE1:  enter these values into the textboxes
  • Host: www.suse1.astate.edu
  • Login (lower case) : your lastname plus hyphen plus first initial
  • Password (mixed case): first 4 characters of your first name plus $ last 3 digits of your student number
  • Port: 21
• Open “Local Browser” (folder icon on tool bar)and navigate to My Documents (or wherever your files are stored locally, e.g., on your jump drive)
• Change tiling on windows if desired:  Window | Auto Layout | . . .
• Navigate server to public_html and select that directory in the Folders pane
• To transfer files
  • First ensure destination directory contents are displayed
  • Select file or directory in source location
  • Click on arrow button between location panes
  • It might also work to drag and drop
• Managing files:  works similarly to the way Windows Explorer works
  • Create/delete directories
  • Delete files
  • Rename files
  • Some problems do occur, however, so verify the results
