COURSE SYLLABUS: FLUTE & SAXOPHONE TECHNIQUES - MUS 3231
 

Note: Students will study each instrument for half the semester beginning with flute.

COURSE GOALS: to acquire specific pedagogical and performance skills for teaching flute (and saxophone) at various levels as is generally expected of competent public school instrumental music educators.
 
INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS:
 

1. The student will be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

a. General pedagogical philosophies of each instrument.

b. Appropriate teaching techniques at various levels of proficiency.

c. Identifying potentially successful students for flute and saxophone study.

d. Identifying performance problems and possible solutions.

 
2. The student will be able to demonstrate skill in:

a. Proper assembly and playing posture.

b. Producing a characteristic tone quality over the practical range of the instrument

c. Proper execution of various styles of articulation.

d. Major scales through 4 sharps and 4 flats in two octaves.

e. Chromatic scale over the practical range of the instrument.

f. Tuning the instrument, understanding intonation tendencies throughout the range and solutions to problems of intonation.

g. Selected studies from Petersen, Advanced Method for Flute, Rubank.

h. Appropriate selected materials for saxophone (see Dr. Carroll's syllabus).

 
COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND EVALUATION PROCEDURES
 

1. Course requirements:

a. Attend class and participate in discussions.

b. Completion of all written and playing assignments by the instructor(s).

c. Complete all examinations, quizzes etc.

d. Complete Proficiency Examination for the woodwind faculty.

 

2. Evaluation - Grades will be determined by:

a. The final grade for the course will be determined by an average of the flute grade and the saxophone grade. Students may pass the course but fail the proficiency. In such case, they must play the proficiency exam again at the end of the following semester.

b. The flute grade is based on: written exams = 50%, playing exams = 50%. (See Dr. Carroll's syllabus for saxophone grade determination).

c. Grade scale: 90-100 = A, 80-89 = B, etc.

 
INSTRUCTIONAL METHODOLOGY
 
The course will include lecture, class discussion, performance, observation, one-on-one instruction, and teaching demonstration (in class).

The aforementioned requirements, assignments, and policies are subject to change. In such case, students enrolled in the class will be fully notified. Students needs and experiences will be considered in modifying this course syllabus. The instructor reserves the right to make changes as deemed necessary.
