PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF COURSE: to encourage an informed and personal narrative about the cultural, philosophic/aesthetic and social significance of music. Specific listening skills will be developed in order to better understand concepts of music composition, style and era. Listening materials will be drawn from any culture, era or genre.

CLASS PROCEDURE AND POLICIES

CELL PHONE POLICY - Cell phones will be turned off before entering class and kept out of sight for the duration of class.

ATTENDANCE/CLASS PARTICIPATION: IF YOU MISS THREE CLASSES WITHOUT A DOCTOR'S EXCUSE YOUR FINAL GRADE WILL BE DROPPED BY ONE LETTER. The course is conducted as a seminar, your presence is valuable, necessary and expected.

CLASS SEATING: if you are physically challenged I will arrange any special needs for you. A seating chart will be made after the 'last day to add a class' is reached. You will be expected to sit in the same relative position at the table throughout the semester. This helps all of us to learn names more quickly. 
 

MAKE UPS: Generally speaking, no make ups for any missed work will be given, however, documented, extenuating circumstances (illness, injury, family emergency etc.,) will certainly be given serious consideration. In such cases, special out-of-class work will be agreed upon to fulfill any missed work.

BLACKBOARD PARTICIPATION: High volume activity in Blackboard is a requirement of this course. See GRADING below. If you do not have a Blackboard Account go to: http://www.astate.edu/sections/blackboard/ - scroll down the page to the procedure tab 'create account'.

BLACKBOARD ASSIGNMENTS - These Assignments or Discussion Forums will have 'due dates and times' assigned to them. Make note of these dates and get your work in on time. After a due date has expired the assignment will be automatically closed for further activity.

WRITING SKILLS - According to University directives this course is 'writing intensive'. Good writing skills are expected and will be reflected in assignment grades.

CLASS PROJECTS: Individual or group presentations on approved subject matter.

GRADING: Grades will be based on Class Attendance/Participation 20% - BLACKBOARD 40% - Class Projects 40%. 

EXTRA POINTS - no extra points projects will be given. Missed work may be made up if there is a documented excuse and I approve it.

Students needs and experiences will be considered in modifying this course syllabus. The instructor reserves the right to make changes as deemed necessary.
