Syllabus for Applied Flute - MUSP 1111, 1112, 3111, 3112, 6112-4

ALL INQUIRIES regarding the flute studio, scholarship auditions, the Bachelor of Music Education degree, or the Bachelor of Music degree with flute concentration should email the instructor at the address above or call the flute studio.

STUDIO CLASS - MUS 3371 - Meets Tuesday evenings in FA 209, 6-7 p.m. Class consists of ensemble and solo playing. All majors must enroll - non-majors on 1/2 tuition scholarship or more must enroll.

RECITAL PERFORMANCE - First year music majors are not required to perform in their first semester. Each semester following, majors will perform at least once on the Tuesday Student Recital.

SCHEDULING - Every student enrolled for applied lessons will provide the instructor with a complete class schedule including at least two preferrred times for their flute lesson. This schedule should be completed and left in the music office FA 241 within the first two days of class in the first week of the new semester (fall and spr). Lesson times will be posted on the studio door by Friday of the first week.

ATTENDANCE - Missed lessons due to illness etc., will be made up during the week of final examinations at the end of the semester.

REQUIRED MATERIALS - A Modern Guide to Fingerings by James Pellerite, a metronome, a tuner (all available through Fluteworld.com), and a flute in good working order. (See Practice Journals, below).

REQUIRED EVENTS - While majors are required to fulfill the requirements of Recital Attendance MUSP 1100, majors are also required to attend any performance by their instructor or their fellow flutists. Failure to adhere to this requirement will result in the lowering of your semester grade by one letter.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS - All music majors must subscribe to the monthly flute journal Flute Talk (published by The Instrumentalist). A discounted rate of $7 per year can be obtained for students by the instructor. Music majors are encouraged to become full-time members of The National Flute Association: www.nfaonline.org

CELL PHONE POLICY - Cell phones must be turned off during lessons and Flute Studio Class.

PRACTICE JOURNALS - The student must keep a detailed journal of all practice regimens. The journals will be presented to the instructor at the beginning of each lesson for writing comments regarding practice habits, and all comments suggested during the lesson. Failure to keep an accurate log as described in this paragraph and explained further by the instructor, will result in the student's final grade being lowered by one letter.

PURCHASING MUSIC - All music required by the instructor may be obtained from Fluteworld.com, tel: 248 855 0410. It is the student's responsibility to order prescribed music in a timely manner.

DAILY PRACTICE - If you are enrolled for 2 hrs credit your minimum daily practice requirement is 2 hours (divided daily as necessary to accomodate the student's schedule). Students enrolled for 1 hrs credit will practice 1 hour daily (divided as necessary).

GRADING - For students taking juries (see 'juries' below), 90% of the semester grade is based on weekly preparation of assignments (an average of all weekly lessons grades). The jury grade will account for the remaining 10%. For students excused from juries (non-majors), 90% of the semester grade will consist of weekly preparation. A 'studio jury' will be performed by such non-majors for the instructor during the last scheduled lesson for the semester and will count as 10% of the student's final grade.

JURIES - All majors are required to perform assigned work covered during the current semester for the assembled woodwind faculty. The juries are held during the first two days of Final Examinations - students will select a 10-minute interval on Jury Schedules posted on the bulletin board outside the Music Office. The jury accounts for 10% of the final grade.

FLEXIBILITY CLAUSE - The aforementioned requirements, assignments, and policies are subject to change. In such case, students enrolled in the class will be fully notified. Students needs and experiences will be considered in modifying this course syllabus. The instructor reserves the right to make changes as deemed necessary.

ACCOMMODATION/DISABILITES CLAUSE - Full cooperation and assistance will be given to any student who may be physically challenged in any way or have validated special needs. if you need course adaptation or accommodation because of a disability, if you have emergency medical information to share, or if you need special arrangements in case the building must be evacuated, please make an appointment with the instructor as soon as possible.

DAILY PRACTICE ROUTINE (GENERAL) Special regimens will be devised by the instructor to address weaknesses in a student's playing ability and to assure overall improvement of musicianship.

Tone Studies (Trevor Wye or Marcel Moyse) 10-20 minutes
Key/Facility Studies - (Kujala or Taffanel/Gaubert) 15-20 minutes
Scales in 3rds (and 6ths at upper-level study) 15 minutes
Double and Triple Tongue patterns (Instructor's design) 15 minutes
Etudes (drawn from the standard etude repertoire to fit the students level and needs) 20-30 minutes
Solo/Excerpt Repertoire (from the standard repertoire) 20-30 minutes
