TEXT: Bonds, Mark Evan. A History of Music in Western Culture, 2nd ed. New Jersy: Prentice Hall, 2006. The text bundle includes: One complete text with an Anthology of Scores (volumes 1 and 2), 14 music CDs (volumes 1 and 2), one (1) Companion Disc and one (1) Bonus Disc. The text and accompanying materials will be used for both Music History 1 and 2.
 
COURSE DESCRIPTION: A study of the history and development of western music from the 18th century to the present day through a carefully selected repertory of works, integrating the requisite names, dates, and concepts of form, genre and style surrounding specific compositions.
 
COURSE GOALS:
1. To encourage critical thinking about the history of music in western culture from 1750 to the present and to acquire knowledge of the most important musical trends, composers and their works in the defined eras.
2. To help students acquire techniques for determining historical period, style, form and genre by examining scores, and listening to musical examples.
3. To help students gain substantive knowledge of the most important examples of western repertoire considered necessary for a successful career as conductor, performer or music educator.
 

INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS:
The student will be able to demonstrate knowledge of:
1. The primary stylistic characteristics and trends of Pre-classical and Classical music with regard to genre, form and harmony including knowledge of the most important composers of the era and their music.

2. The primary stylistic characteristics and trends of the 19th century with regard to genre, form, tone color and harmony including knowledge of the most important composers of the era and their music.
3. The primary stylistic characteristics and trends of the 20th and 21st centuries with regard to genre, form, tone color, rhythm and harmony including knowledge of the most important composers of the modern era and their music.
