Music at Arkansas State University


        The Department of Music at Arkansas State University, a department within the College of Fine Arts, is dedicated to providing students a quality education through degree programs that are fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music and taught by an exceptionally qualified faculty.  Many graduates are state and regional leaders in music education and performance.

Graduate Assistantships


        Numerous assistantship opportunities are available in the Department of Music.  Specific opportunities exist in assisting with band and choral activities, performing with the ASU Brass Quintet, tutoring students in music theory, teaching general education classes, teaching applied and class music lessons, and assisting in the electronic music lab.  Graduate Assistants are assigned duties according to their interests, skills, and career goals, as well as the particular needs of the department.  Every effort is made to assign students to their primary area of interest and to provide a valuable experience in their area of study.  Assistantship stipends for the 2007-2008 school year are $3600 per semester and $714 per summer term.  Click here to download an Assistantship Application.  Click here for additional information on financial aid.  Students will be allowed a maximum of four semesters on assistantship not including summers.

Facilities


        The Department of Music is housed in the Fine Arts Building, a well-maintained, modern facility dedicated to instruction and performance.  Included are band and choral rehearsal areas, a two hundred seat Recital Hall, a state-of-the-art electronic music studio, an electronic piano lab, a computer lab, practice rooms, and a separate percussion studio and practice facility.  The Fowler Center, a performing arts facility completed in 2001, includes the magnificent Riceland Hall, a 975-seat concert hall.

Performing Ensembles


        Graduate music students have the opportunity to perform in a variety of quality music ensembles that are widely recognized through invitations to participate in prestigious events at the regional, national, and international levels.

Faculty


        The outstanding music faculty at Arkansas State University represents a broad spectrum of professional areas and are recognized as master teachers and performing artists in their respective fields.   

The Community


        Arkansas State University is located in Jonesboro, a community of approximately 55,000 residents with outstanding cultural activities.  Over one hundred concerts, recitals, theatrical productions, and art exhibits are presented by the College of Fine Arts faculty and students each year.  Internationally and nationally renowned guest artists, musicians, and speakers are presented through the university Lecture-Concert Series and the Fowler Center Series.  Close proximity to Memphis (65 miles) and Little Rock (120 miles) offers easy access to other cultural opportunities of outstanding quality.
