COURSE
OUTLINE: ART 4443 PHOTOGRAPHY AS A FINE ART
The aim of
this course is to give the advanced student an in-depth
study of photographic tools and techniques in order to
facilitate the student's artistic expression in the medium
of photography. ART 4403, Photography for the Graphic
Designer or JOUR 3043, Photography, or the instructor's
permission is prerequisite to this course. It is helpful if
ART 1043, Drawing II, ART 1013, Design I and ART 4503
History of Photography have been successfully completed. In
addition to regularly scheduled class time, this course
requires lab sessions outside of class. Lab times will be
arranged at the beginning of the semester. All students must
pay a $20.00 lab fee prior to using the lab.
Grades will be
based on evidence of the student's expressed knowledge of
photographic techniques, design skills, following the
limitations and parameters of the assignments and the
originality of the presented solutions as personal
expression of the photographic aesthetic. Students are
expected to work at the senior level and to take full
responsibility for their acts: Don't miss lectures or labs
and expect the instructor to give individual instruction,
critique or extra consideration. The student is expected to
participate actively in critique and all group sessions.
Final grade in this course will be based on a portfolio of
work completed expressly for this class, and a research
paper/project, as well as active participation in classroom
discussion and critique and a public display of the
students' work.
Attendance
Policy: This is a Senior level course, and as such the
student cannot fail the course for lack of attendance.
However, attendance is an indication of the student's
commitment to his or her area of study. Therefore, my policy
is to allow absences for twice the number of regularly
scheduled weekly meetings without penalty. For every absence
beyond those allowed, I deduct one project grade point in
calculating the student's cumulative grade. Example: A
Student in a MWF class misses nine times (three beyond those
allowed) and has at the final a total of 48 points. In this
course 46 is the cut off between B and C. When I deduct the
three points for the excessive absences, the grade drops to
C.
