I.
ART 4363: Graphic Design Internship.
II. This
course offers the qualified advanced student the opportunity
of earning college credit while working full or part time in
a professional graphic design setting.
III. Justification:
1) This course
will give Qualified advanced students the benefit of real
world on-the-job experience in graphic communications. This
course will provide valuable work experience to augment the
studio/classroom.
2) This course
will allow the student to test the marketability of his
graphic design skills, and make contacts in the graphic
design profession thus facilitating his transition into that
profession.
3) This course
is for Seniors only.
4) This course
is for students who are in their senior year and are ready
to prove their abilities in a professional design
environment.
IV. The
course will be handled on a TBA basis in co-operation with
professional graphic design and advertising agencies in the
community or region. The student must be on site for nine
hours per week for the 3 credit-hour course. Students will
be assigned an advisor who will require weekly written
reports (via form letter) from both student and employer.
The Weekly Reports should detail the student's general
duties and conduct as well as specific tasks accomplished
that week.
The advisor
will visit or telephone the employer at least twice during
the semester and the student will be expected to produce a
portfolio of work at mid-semester and another at the end of
the semester.
V. The
prospective intern site supervisor must agree to involve the
student in every aspect of the business. The student will be
required to produce examples of work suitable for portfolio
presentation. A minimum number of projects for the semester
may be established by the advisor based on the individual
situation.
VI. This
course will be undertaken with the co-operation of various
professional graphic design and advertising agencies in the
community and surrounding area who have expressed interest
in such an involvement with the Art Department. No
additional cost will accrue to the Art Department however,
students in internships outside of the immediate community
will be expected to make their own travel and in some cases
living arrangements. Also, internships in distant cities may
involve liabilities that the department may not wish to
accept.
VII. Required
Reading: Graphic Design Career Guide by James Craig and The
Graphic Artist's Guide to Marketing and Self-Promotion by
Sally Prince Davis.
VIII. Staffing
will be handled on a TBA basis with no impact except on the
individual instructor.
XI. Library
holdings are adequate to support this course.
