POSC 3003, Introduction to Political Analysis An undergraduate introduction to the systematic, quantitative analysis of politics The textbook situation is slightly but unusually complicated. Two related texts are required for the course
These two texts come, when purchased as a set, at a reduced price. In addition, you can add in the student version of SPSS, the data analysis software package which will be used in the course, for a three piece bundle. If you have a computer and want the option of doing work for this class away from the Library 149 lab where the standard version of SPSS is loaded, you will want Option 2 from CQ that includes (1) Pollock's Essentials, (2) his SPSS companion, and (3) SPSS Student Version Software. CQ says that, compared to the set composed of only the two books, adding the student version of SPSS adds $25 to the cost. A few other notes: SPSS says that the student version provides a time-limited license (I think just one year); moreover, installation requires an authorization code which may be removed or be invalid on used copies. (Just to get a little more complicated: From what I learned from CQ, the Pollock package comes with Release 14.0 of the student version of SPSS; the technical requirements for Release 14.0, which is Windows-based, specify, among other things, Microsoft 2000, XP, or ME (more details are at the Prentice-Hall page); please don't add the SPSS software until you are sure you can run it on your system.) It's a free country, and you are free to get or not get the student version of SPSS; but it's not a totally free country--you must buy the two textbooks. As the semester wears on, I may also assign supplementary readings, either from the web or on-line journals.
