- Albrecht Dürer pushed the art of engraving to its highest level in history.
His skill with the burin was unsurpassed and done tastefully. But many engravers who followed and emulated his skill were more interested in making copies and reproductions.
Dürer's amazing print which we know by the title Knight, Death and the Devil, was a major influence for philosophers, theologians and historians. I thought I'd have a bit of fun and make a new version of Dürer's print, and I thought I might call it The Burin Conquers All. It would feature a mighty burin to symbolize the power of printing over the past 5 centuries.
In 1513, Dürer's Knight seemed to be too scared to look at Death and the Devil, but after being boxed up in armour for 500 years, I thought that this poor guy ought to be allowed to relax for awhile. And since my print will be an exercise in satire, I got the Knight to loosen up a bit and strike a different pose.
And I perched a giant mockingbird on the mighty burin to remind us that this bit of satire is all for fun.
