Honors World History

One of the big questions facing world historians is that of the dominance of the West. Until quite recently most historians assumed, when they thought about it at all, that the West had always been richer and more sophisticated than the rest of the world. In the second half of the 20th century that assumption has come under increasing scrutiny. Now various historians believe Western dominance to have begun as early as 1498 or as recently as 1850.

A major theme in Amitav Ghosh’s In an Antique Land is Western hegemony or dominance in Asia. When does Ghosh think western hegemony begins? How is it expressed? Is it expressed in different ways at different times? How are South Asia and the Middle East affected by western hegemony? Do you concur with Ghosh’s conclusions? Why?

Your paper should be six to ten pages long, typed, double-spaced, and should include full scholarly apparatus. Your paper is due in class on December 4. I will be happy to read and critique paper drafts that are given to me at least ten days before the due date.
