Scenario:

A beef producer is wintering dry, pregnant cows on dormant bermudgrass pasture.  She is providing fescue hay (7% protein (as-fed), 42% TDN (as-fed) and 89% dry matter).  Assume the average cow weighs 1,100 lb and she will consume 2% of her body weight as hay dry matter or about 25 lb of hay daily.  Using the table on p. 340, is this cow able to consume enough hay to meet her daily needs for protein and TDN?  Assume a complete mineral  and fresh water are always available.

Under the same conditions, can a 1100-lb. lactating cow that will consume 25 lb hay per day meet her needs for protein and TDN if she requires 2.0 lb and 13 lb per day, respectively? If not, how would you make up the deficiencies.
