Chapter 1
Review of Nutrients and Digestion
The title implies that this chapter is a review, and
hopefully it is. We need to be able classify
nutrients and understand their role in the animal so that we can make
better informed decisions about managing nutritional programs of
animals. Be able to categorize nutrients as shown in Figure 1-1, page
4 of your textbook. We also need to know the terminology. I
know there is a lot of information in this chapter, but hit the highpoints
and concentrate on the study questions at the end of the chapter and the
information covered in the practice quizzes that are shown below. Know the
information well enough to correctly answer questions like the ones at the
end of the chapter.
Chapter Goals
- Define the nutrient needs of animal. (know the six
basic nutrients found in feeds)
- Classify nutrients according to the chemical
analysis scheme (Figure 1-1, p.4)
- Explain the difference in six basic nutrients (i.e.,
how they function in the animal, thus their need by the animal; know the
difference enough not confuse a water-soluble vitamin with an amino acid)
- Identify symptoms of nutrient deficiency or toxicity
(learn the ones that are covered in by the questions at the end of the
chapter -section III-A, page 66)
- Identify parts and function of animal digestive
systems
- Compare differences and similarities of digestive
systems (know that the type of digestive system an animal has is what primarily
determines what type of feeds are appropriate for that animal; e..g, hay is
appropriate for cattle, sheep, and horses, but not for swine, poultry, dogs,
and cats.... why?)
Students should:
- Read through Chapter 1 in your textbook.
- Go through the PowerPoint presentation (optional)
- Take online practice quizzes.
- Practice taking Exam 1 on Blackboard.
Students must: (for online students)
- Take Web Quizzes 1-3. Refer to the schedule
for the sections of the chapter each quiz covers.

Study Aids
These activities are provided to assist the student with learning the
subject matter. Because you will not be in a classroom per se, you will
need to take advantages of these study aids to help you understand the
material. PLEASE PLEASE do not hesitate to come by my office, Email or
call me if you need help! It's my job! I want YOU to be
successful in this course!
Challenge Problem:
Diagnose and treat the condition below. Explain the underlying
metabolic causes of the signs and the abnormal chemical profile shown
below. Discuss a protocol to prevent this disease.
The following signs are observed in a dairy cow during early lactation.
- milk production below normal
- acetone smell to breath
- losing weight
The chemical profile of the blood:
- higher than normal blood urea nitrogen
- elevated ketones
