Records of Athletes
Very few ancient Greek records have been found; however, vase painting, literary and epigraphic evidence suggest there was great competition and rivalry among Greek athletic competitors.
One inscription from a statue base at Delphi lists the victories of a Greek boxer named Theogenes of Thasos. Theogenes won a great number of victories in many cities throughout Greece, winning three in Delphi alone (Tod 106). Another record breaking boxer recorded at Delphi was Dorieus of Rhodes. His victories and fame were so wide spread that when he was taken to Athens as a prisoner of war in 407 B.C. he was released without attached conditions.
