About Ashes2Art

Ashes2Art was developed by project co-founders Arne Flaten and Paul Olsen (Coastal Carolina University). In fall 2005 the initial phase of the project was launched. In this phase students focused on three piazze in Renaissance Florence--the results of which can be seen at http://www.coastal.edu/ashes2art.   While that initial attempt did not truly “reconstruct” lost monuments, it allowed Flaten and Olsen to evaluate various technologies in a classroom setting and to gauge the potential and efficacy of such a program.  In fall 2006 Alyson Gill (Arkansas State University) joined with Flaten and Olsen in developing a new phase of the project in which students from ASU would collaborate with Coastal Carolina University students and faculty to digitally rebuild monuments at Delphi, Greece. In spring 2007 Ashes2Art was taught at both universities, and in the summer of 2007, having secured permission from the Hellenic Ministry to Culture to do so, faculty and students from both universities traveled to Greece to take panoramic photographs of various sites including Delphi and to further study the sites. The collaboration between ASU and Coastal Carolina is ongoing, and in spring 2008 ASU's Ashes2Art class ("Digital Delphi") will be offered at ASU for a second time.
