Required and Elective Courses

.ELSE 3023 Characteristics of Disabilities ---------Covers historical and legal foundations of service delivery, terminology, professional ethics and responsibilities, as well as an in-depth study of disabilities  For students interested in pursuing a career in the field of the P-4 education, health professions, special education, or related disciplines. 

 

ELSE 3643 The Exceptional Student in the Regular Classroom--------The purpose of this course is to provide teachers in training an introduction to exceptional students, with the major focus on serving these individuals in regular classroom environments. 

ELSE 4733 Gifted Children in the Regular Classroom---------A study of gifted children to facilitate the education of regular classroom teachers as they strive to assist in the identification of gifted children and to further enhance the education of the gifted while in the regular classroom.  Specific areas of giftedness will be studied pertaining to characteristics, identification, and differentiated instruction.

ELSE 5033 Behavior Intervention and Consultation         Techniques of systematic behavioral analysis, prevention, and intervention for students at-risk for school failure or students with disabilities.  Emphasis is placed on both direct and consultative interventions. (Prerequisites: Educational Psychology, Advanced Educational Psychology, or Permission of instructor) (F, Sp, Su) 

ELSE 5043  Educational Diagnosis and Assessment in Special Education  A study of the principles and practices for assessment and identification of individuals with disabilities. Administration of formal             and informal assessment instruments, and interpretation and reporting of assessment data is emphasized.  (Prerequisites: SE 2013, and SE 3023) (F, Su)                

ELSE 5623   Diagnostic and Corrective Instruction in Special Education Mathematics for Individuals with Mild Disabilities     Developing a comprehensive perspective of diagnostic and corrective needs of individuals with mild disabilities.  Emphasis will stress concept and skill development. (F, Su)

ELSE 5633  Diagnostic and Corrective Reading Instruction for Individuals with Disabilities           A study of the nature of reading disability, diagnostic and corrective instructional techniques, and materials for use      with students in resource and self-contained classrooms. (25 clinical hours of child contact required) (Sp, Su)

ELSE 5703 Identification, Nature and Needs of the Gifted, Talented, and Creative--------Identification, Nature, and Needs of the Gifted, Talented, and Creative has been designed to provide a comprehensive study of methods for identifying gifted and talented students. The course includes characteristics, educational, and social needs of this population in a variety of educational settings.

 

ELSE 5713 Educational Procedures for the Gifted, Talented, and Creative-------------Focus is on current theory and practice in planning educational programs for gifted, talented, and creative students. Prerequisite: SE 5703 or permission of professor.

 

ELSE 5723 Assessment for Programming for Gifted, Talented, and Creative-------------Instruments will be reviewed for the purpose of preliminary screening and identification and to provide differentiated programming for the gifted, talented, and creative.

ELSE 6033 Affective Programming in the Classroom------------------A study in the affective needs of children.  Emphasis is placed on responding to affective needs of students and developing social skills in students.

ELSE 6053   Educational Procedures for Individuals with Mild Disabilities        A study of models for the             planning and delivering of instruction to students with disabilities who require an individualized general curriculum. Specific techniques and materials for teaching mathematics and written language are emphasized.  (Prerequisites: SE 2013, and SE 3023) (F)

ELSE 6063  Educational Procedures for Children with Emotional Disabilities        Theoretical orientations and specific procedures for providing services to children with emotional problems.     (Prerequisites: SE 2013, and SE 3023) (F)

ELSE 6073  Educational Procedures for Individuals with Moderate-Profound Disabilities      A study of   the basic methods and materials to facilitate skill development for individuals who require an   individualized functional independent living curriculum.     (Prerequisites: SE 2013, and SE 3023) (Sp)                    


ELSE 6093   Collaboration for Special Education Service Delivery        A study of the team planning process,             working with families, and service delivery options for special education, including special class      placement, consultation, collaborative teaching.   (Prerequisites: SE 5043 SE 6053) (Sp, Su)               

ELSE 6103   Seminar - Studies of Research in Special Education       An examination of the current issues and trends in special education as found in the professional literature, as it relates to the individual student’s      area of interest.  A research project resulting in a poster session presentation is required. (Prerequisites: Admission to candidacy to the M.S.E. program in Special Education.)  (F, Sp)

ELSE 6433 Creativity---------------The purpose of this course is to explore creativity as a meaningful curriculum effort for education of creative students.  Emphasis is on the theoretical aspects of creative and productive thought and on the practical application of theory to foster creativity in the classroom.

 

ELSE 6673  Socially Maladjusted and Emotionally Disturbed Children------------To develop a knowledge and understanding of children and youth with emotional behavior disorders.

 

ELSE 6723 Assessment of Young Children with Exceptionalities--------- A study of evaluative and diagnostic instruments and procedures used with young children exceptional children from birth to five years of age

 

ELSE 6733 Methods for Working with Young Children with Exceptionalities--------The purpose of this course is to provide the master teacher  with knowledge of current theories, "best practices," and strategies relevant to working with children from birth to five years of age who have special needs.

ELSE 6813    Introductory Laboratory Experiences in Special Education    A series of field-based experiences designed to provide an individual who does not already hold a license to teach special        education with opportunities to work with students with disabilities. Emphasis is placed on application of theory and best-practices.  (Prerequisites: SE 4/5043 SE 4/5053) (F, Sp, Su)

ELSE 6823    Advanced Laboratory Experiences in Special Education          A series of field-based experiences designed to provide opportunities for the experienced special educator to gain expertise with students of a different age or disability not currently on the teacher’s caseload. (Prerequisite: SE 6813 or one year experience teaching in special education) (F, Sp, Su)

ELSE 6843 Advanced Practicum for Gifted, Talented, and Creative--------Innovative teaching and research efforts are demonstrated.  Opportunities are sought which address individual needs and abilities for students as well as young scholars attending.  Prerequisties: SE 6063 and permission of professor.
