for Master of Science in Education Degree
with a Major in
The purpose
of the Program of Study for Master of Science in Education Degree with a major
in Special Education – Emotionally Disturbed is to offer educators a planned
program of study at the graduate level that is based on the recommendations of
professional organizations and accrediting associations such as the Council for
Exceptional Children (CEC) and NCATE.
Description of the Program
The program
in Special Education – Emotionally Disturbed is a competency-based training
program that blends theory with practical application as it extends the skills
of the special education mild disabilities teacher to provide direct and
consultative service to children with emotional-behavioral problems.
Instruction makes use of case-based examples and several multimedia programs.
Field placements are arranged in a variety of public school, private and
hospital mental health settings to enable the student to gain experience in
instructional delivery and interacting with children with challenging behaviors
while under the supervision of experts.
Students who hold a general
education teacher licensure may use this program to gain licensure as a Special
Education - Instructional Specialist Grades 4-12 by completing 9 additional
credit hours of courses from the IS 4-12 program and taking the restricted
electives marked with an asterisk (*).
