CATALOG DESCRIPTION: A study of curricula, methods and techniques involved in
teaching career orientation as related to the 16 occupational clusters in the world of work.

COMPETENCIES: After completion of the "Methods of Organizing and Teaching Career
Orientation" course, each student will be able to:
1. Define terms associated with career education.
2. Explain the historical development of career education in the U.S..
3. Explain the four models for Career Education developed by the Federal
Government.
4. List four providers/agencies providing career information, counseling, or
vocational guidance.
5. Explain the Career Selection Model (Career Decision Diamond).
6. Explain the characteristics unique to junior high age students according to
Havinghurst.
7. Explain the purposes and functions of interest inventories, aptitude tests,
personality inventories.
8. Identify and evaluate resources and reference materials used in a CO classroom.
9. Explain the 16 cluster system of organizing careers and the sub-components.
10. Describe the methods recommended for effectively teaching CO.
11. Select and manage supplies needed for CO.
12. List the physical facilities, equipment, and supplies needed for CO as
determined by the State Dept. of Ed.
13. Identify instructional resources relating to Career Orientation and their sources.
14. Demonstrate how to use guidance resources relating to CO to research careers.

Inventories, Career Briefs, Chronicle of Guidance, etc.).
15. Explain the importance of planning, decision making, and research to success in
CO.
16. Demonstrate how to prepare and present a lesson plan in a CO course.
17. Develop a one or two semester plan (18 or 36 week) for a CO course.
18. Identify appropriate methods for use with CO and how they are to be used in
teaching.
19. List appropriate visual aids for use in CO classroom and explain how to
properly use them.
20. Identify the minimum standards required for conducting a CO course in
Arkansas.
21. Explain how to incorporate local school personnel into the CO course.
22. Explain how to organize an advisory committees for CO.
23. List seven benefits of having an advisory committee for CO.
24. State the guidelines for the operation of an advisory committee for CO.
25. Explain how to establish and maintain an effective and active CO Club.
26. List five benefits to having a CO Club.
27. Explain effective approaches to classroom management in CO.
28. Define "hands-on activity" as it relates to CO.
29. Explain how to properly select and demonstrate a hands-on activity in a CO
classroom.
30. Describe how to incorporate the real game into CO.
31. Identify evaluate techniques appropriate for CO.
32. Explain how to effectively use bulletin boards in CO course.
33. Discuss ideas and strategies for working with special needs students in CO.
34. Identify employability skills and explain they are important to career success.
35. Discuss how attitudes and values relate to job or career selection.
36. Describe the purpose, organization, and function of a Career Action Plan.
37. Explain how to assist students in development of an individualized Career

38. List and explain the various contests associated with CO.
39. Explain the CO curriculum frameworks correlate to state and local scope and
content of a CO course.
40. Explain how CO is funded by the state.
41. Describe the mission, benefits, and opportunities for participation and leadership
in the professional organization for Career Orientation teachers (Arkansas
Career Orientation Teachers Association - ACOTA)
42. Describe the nature and purpose of the Arkansas Career Orientation Teachers
Conference (ACOTA).
43. Describe how to safely and effectively conduct CO field trips.
44. Explain the important of having a positive attitude and interpersonal skills to
career success.
45. Develop a yearly budget for CO.
46. Explain why participation in professional organizations and activities is
important for CO teachers.
47. Describe the purpose and procedures for administering the state mandated
competency testing of CO students.
48. Explain how to analyze competency test data.
49. Identify the state staff in Career Education and their role in working with
teachers in Arkansas.
50. Explain how to organize a successful job shadowing experience for maximum
student involvement.
51. Differentiate lessons for special needs students in a CO Course.

NOTE: If you are absent it is your responsibility to seek out the information you missed since the information will likely be on a test or quiz in the coming weeks. For information about assignments see the instructor. Quizzes may not be made up without a medical doctor's excuse, or related professional, i.e judge. .
It is the student's responsibility to get notes from fellow class members for any missed classes.
Make up of some activities is impossible due to the nature of the event. Therefore students will be allowed to drop one 25 point activity.
For every two days missed from class students are required to develop one additional lesson plan or develop a new hands-on activity.
Acceptable excuses are court ordered appearances, medical conditions, or death of a close family member. Documentation is required for each of the approved absences (printed document or letter regarding legal need to be in court, doctor's excuse, obituary of the departed family member).
