Delta Blues Symposium XIV:
Sense of Place
The Department of English and Philosophy at Arkansas State University (Jonesboro campus) announces its fourteenth annual Delta Blues Symposium, to be held 27-29 March 2008. The theme for Delta Blues Symposium XIV is Sense of Place. This year's symposium includes scholars and students of the humanities and social science--especially anthropology, art history, economics, folklore studies, geography, history, literature, musicology, political science, and sociology.
Presentations focus on various aspects of the seven-state Mississippi River Delta region and with the blues, perhaps the region's most famous export. At this year's symposium, Faulkner scholar Theresa Towner, novelist Jack Butler, poet Ralph Burns, and blues musician James "Super Chikan" Johnson will be in attendance. Additionally, there are two panels on Eudora Welty. Panelists of ASU graduate students will begin the symposium by discussing Welty on Thursday afternoon at 2 PM. The symposium ends on Saturday with a panel consisting of nationally recognized Welty scholars Sally Wolff, Peggy Prenshaw, and Mae Claxton.
