| This family includes about 100 species of
freshwater species found in Africa, Syria and southern and western Asia
(Philippines to Java). They have four pairs of barbels and are
scaleless. Airbreathing is accomplished with a labyrinthic organ
arising from the gill arches ('labyrinth catfishes'). Some species are
capable of traveling over short distances on land ('walking catfishes').
Some are burrowers with small eyes (Nelson 1994). These could be
considered as preadaptations to the hypogean life. Three
troglomorphic species have been described so far. |
