William Thompson |
b. Belfast, Ireland, 2 December 1805; d.
London, England, 17 February 1852
During his youth he abandoned his father’s linen business for science for
which he was fond from an early age. He was particularly interested
in birds. He was elected president of the Belfast Natural History in
1843 (which he had joined in 1826). Reported Amblyopsis spelaea
as ‘perhaps the first examples of their respective species brought thence
to Europe’ (Thompson 1844: 111). |
