He became mayor of his home town at the age
of 28 and was a top official of the Spanish Republic during that country's
civil war.
He fled Spain after the Civil War and went to Mexico where he taught at
the Instituto Politénico Nacional starting in 1942. In 1947
became professor of natural resources at the Geography Department of the
Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México
(UNAM). In 1949 he left to work for FAO
in Rome and the to the United Nations, where he reached the position of
undersecretary of the UN (Alvarez 1992).
He was member of the
Escuela Nacional de Ciencias Biologicas of the UNAM that included, among others
José Alvarez. They carried out earlier explorations in
search of the troglomorphic Astyanax fasciatus. |
