Alípio de Miranda Ribeiro |
b. Rio Preto, Minas Gerais, Brazil 21 February 1874; d. Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil, 8 January 1939
Perhaps the father of Brazilian ichthyology. Miranda Ribeiro was
interested from an early age in natural history translating into Portuguese
some of the works of Buffon. In 1894 he was appointed curator at the
National Museum in Rio de Janeiro and in 1929 became Head professor of
the Department of Zoology, a post he heal until his death. He explored the
Amazon and organized the Inspectoria de Pesca, the first official
fisheries department in Brazil. His most famous work was his 1911's Fauna
Brasiliensis-Peixes (Myers 1939).
He described Pimelodella kronei (= Typhlobagrus kronei) (Miranda Ribeiro
