Family: Balitoridae

River loaches

This is a family of the Order Cypriniformes is one of freshwater species from Eurasia composed by more than 600 species.  They have three or more pair of barbels.  Some species are scaleless.  Many tend to hide underneath rocks (Nelson 1994).  They have 14 troglobitic representatives.  Yang et al. (1994) mentioned a Oreonectes sp. for a limestone cave near Xiaao, Duan county, Guanxi, China, yet to be described.

Trajano et al. (2002) found numerous individuals of the genera Homaloptera and Balitora in caves of Thailand.  In 1997 an epigean individual of the species Balitora burmanica was collected in a cave in Thailand (Trajano et al. 2002).
