Protocobitis typhlops Yang, Chen & Lan, 1994

 
Common Name:  None given.
Etymology:  proto (Gr) primitive; cobitis (L) a generic name for members of the subfamily Cobitinae; typhlos (Gr) blind; ops (Gr) eye.
Major Synonyms:  None.
History:  Specimens collected in August 1991 by Lan Jia-Hu.
   

Morphological Characteristics: 

Troglomorphic Characters:  Lacks lateral line.

Eye Condition:  No externally visible eyes.
Pigmentation:  Depigmented.
Scales:  Scales rudimentary and only along the midline of the sides of the body.
Swim (gas) bladder:  It also lacks a bony swim-bladder capsule, which may be a primitive character.

   

Distribution:  China: Guangxi: Duan county: Xiaao town (24o 15' N, 107o 05' E).
