What is W.I.T.S.? The objective of the Women in Technology and Science (WITS) workshop is to expose 5th and 6th grade girls to the sciences and women with successful science careers. Interest in science careers has been keyed to early experiences in science and interaction with science professionals. This early exposure encourages the eventual recruitment and retention of these girls in science-based careers.
Women in science-based career areas have developed and lead a thirty minute workshop in their area of science for groups of 5th and 6th grade girls throughout the day. The WITS workshop day typically includes seven workshops, lunch and a noon presentation on a focus topic. Members in the NEA Association for Women in Science organize the program, lead workshops and participate in planning and carrying out all the associated tasks for this program. They realize the value of the mentoring relationship they experience during the workshops with the girls, the presenters and through their involvement with NEA Association for Women in Science.
What will my daughter be doing? Upon entering the Laboratory Sciences Building, your daughter will be placed in a small group of girls under the supervision of several Women In Science members. If the girls come with a group of friends they should be prepared to be separated. We are trying to encourage the girls to be independent thinkers and this will allow them to explore without peer pressure. This group will be attending approximately 7 workshops throughout the day. Additional information can be found at the following links:
There are many things happening in Jonesboro that day to occupy yourselves. At ASU we have an afternoon football game (girls will need to be picked up at ~3 pm) and the Little Bit of Christmas at the Convocation Center. As you all know, we also have The Mall at Turtle Creek just down Stadium form the campus.
Feel free to contact any of the names at NEA AWIS.
What will my daughter be learning? Your daughter will interact with women scientists who will present information on topics such as entomology (the study of insects) to molecular biology (DNA and proteins within a cell) to psychology (study of animal behavior) to medicine ..... the topics are limitless. This year we are also including veterinarians and female engineers.
What will this Ultimate Fieldtrip cost me? The fee for the workshop is $5.00 that will cover a mid-morning snack and the materials that she will receive. Your daughter will receive a goody bag of things that will remind her, for a lifetime, of the day she spent working with women scientists. You may register your daughter on-line by using the above button - 2006 WITS.
W.I.T.S. Commemorative T-Shirt This year, there will be a commemorative t-shirt available for purchase prior to the Fieldtrip. The shirt may be purchased for $10.00. Order form is attached to the WITS T-Shirt tab above.
If you need additional information, do not hesitate to contact me at jloutsch@astate.edu or 972-3253 or on my cell phone - 761-1317. I look forward to working with your daughter.
